Personal or Whole Don Chicken Pie: Which Should You Buy?

The Don chicken pie comes in two sizes on the maker’s menu: Personal, which feeds 1, and Whole, which feeds 4-6. Same DonChef recipe (the one Chef Don Lim created in 1983), same golden, flaky crust, same savoury filling of chunky chicken, potato and vegetables. The choice changes how you serve it, reheat it, carry it and pay for it. Our crew has bought both more times than we will admit, so here is the decision guide we wish we had on day one. For the full background on the pie itself, start with our Don chicken pie complete guide.
When should you buy personal Don chicken pies?
Personal pies win when the eating is scattered.
- People eat at different times. Teenagers, shift workers, the person who “ate already”. Everyone grabs a pie when they are ready.
- People want different flavours. One Original, one Black Pepper, one Curry. A whole pie locks the table into one flavour.
- Lunchboxes and snacks. A personal pie is its own container. No knife, no plate, no argument over the biggest slice.
- You want to freeze some. Single pies freeze and reheat more evenly than wedges cut from a big one.
- Fast reheating. A personal pie fits an air fryer basket. The maker’s guidance is 150C for 5 minutes, then 200C for 5 minutes.
When should you buy a whole Don chicken pie?
A whole pie wins when the eating is together.
- Family dinner or a potluck. A whole pie on the table looks like an occasion in a way a stack of personal pies does not.
- You want a pie slice with sides. Add a salad, roast vegetables or soup, and a whole pie stretches to 6.
- Price per serving matters. Cut into 6, a whole pie is cheaper per portion than personal pies (the maths is below).
- You like more filling per bite. In our opinion, a slice from the middle of a big pie gives a higher ratio of filling to crust than the edge-heavy personal pie. Personal pie fans prefer the reverse, which is exactly why both sizes exist.
How do you cut a whole chicken pie into 6 neat slices?
A whole pie straight from the oven is a lava pool. Patience gives you clean slices.
- Rest it. Leave the pie for 10 minutes after reheating so the gravy thickens slightly. A rested pie holds its shape.
- Score the lid first. Use a serrated knife with a gentle sawing motion to cut through the crust without crushing it.
- Cut like a clock. Make three straight cuts through the centre: 12 to 6, then 2 to 8, then 4 to 10. That gives six even wedges.
- Finish with a sharp chef’s knife. Press straight down through the filling and base, wiping the blade between cuts.
- Lift with a pie server. Slide it under the base of the first slice and lift slowly. The first slice is always the messy one. Cook’s privilege.
How is reheating a whole pie different from a personal pie?
A bigger pie has much more filling between the outside and the centre, so heat takes longer to reach the middle. The crust, meanwhile, keeps browning.
| Personal pie | Whole pie | |
|---|---|---|
| Best appliance | Air fryer, oven or toaster oven | Oven (measure your air fryer basket or toaster oven first; many are too small) |
| Maker’s guidance | Air fryer 150C for 5 minutes, then 200C for 5 minutes; oven 150-180C for 20-30 minutes | Same oven range as a starting point; expect it to need longer |
| Foil | Usually not needed | Tent loosely over the lid once it is golden, remove for the last few minutes |
| Doneness check | Cut into the centre | Check the very middle, not just near the edge |
| Target | Piping hot throughout, 75C at the centre with a probe | Same |
The whole-pie advice beyond the maker’s oven range is general food practice: a loose foil tent stops the lid burning while the centre catches up. Reheat only what you will eat. For a timed table, use our reheat calculator. Feeding a crowd at once? Our serving chicken pies warm for a crowd experiment covers holding pies hot without drying them out.
How does each size travel?
Personal pies travel well in their box, stack neatly and can be shared out on arrival. The flip side: more boxes to carry.
A whole pie travels best flat and level. Keep the box on the car floor rather than the seat, or on your lap on the MRT. Do not tilt it, or the gravy shifts and the lid can slide. Bring a knife and a pie server to the potluck: hosts never have the right one.
Either size: if the pie is not being eaten within 2 hours, it goes in the fridge, sooner in Singapore heat. The maker says chilled pies keep up to 3 days.
What is the price per serving, personal vs whole?
Using the maker’s printed menu dated February 2026, an Original personal pie is $6.80 and an Original whole pie is $33.80. Prices are as of October 2026, check the official site before you order.
| Option | Total | Servings | Price per serving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Original pie | $6.80 | 1 | $6.80 |
| Whole Original pie, cut in 4 | $33.80 | 4 | $8.45 |
| Whole Original pie, cut in 5 | $33.80 | 5 | $6.76 |
| Whole Original pie, cut in 6 | $33.80 | 6 | about $5.63 |
| Five personal Original pies | $34.00 | 5 | $6.80 |
The maths says the whole pie wins on cost once you cut it into 6 slices, roughly breaks even at 5, and costs more per head at 4. In real life, what tips it for us is who is eating and when, and how many people turn up. For a headcount bigger than one table, run the numbers on a party pie calculator before you pick a size. Note that whole-pie prices differ by flavour on the same menu, so do your own sums for Black Pepper or Curry.

Quick questions
How many people does a whole Don chicken pie feed?
The maker lists the whole pie as feeding 4-6 and the personal pie as feeding 1. In our experience, 4 is right for hungry adults eating pie as the main course, and 6 works when there are sides, kids or other dishes on the table.
Can I freeze part of a whole chicken pie?
Yes. Cut the pie into slices once it has cooled, wrap each slice airtight, and freeze within the maker's 3-day fridge window, ideally on day one. Thaw slices in the fridge and reheat until piping hot. Never refreeze a slice once it has been thawed and reheated.
Is a whole pie cheaper than buying personal pies?
Per serving, yes, once you cut it into 5 or more slices. Using the February 2026 printed menu, an Original whole pie cut into 6 works out cheaper per slice than a personal pie. Cut into 4, each slice costs more. Check current prices before ordering.
